Stay above the falls in North Georgia.
High in the North Georgia mountains, Amicalola Falls State Park & Lodge takes its name from the tallest waterfall in Georgia. The Lodge sits inside the park, near the famous stone archway that marks the start of the Approach Trail to Springer Mountain, the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. Each spring, hikers shoulder their packs there and begin the walk to Maine.
The unofficial start of the Appalachian Trail.
Mornings here start with white fog settling over the valley and the sound of Little Amicalola Creek working its way downhill. Thru-hikers checking their packs share the trails with families on a first hike and naturalists pointing out hawks overhead. The plugged-in world loses its grip out here, and the day fills instead with birdsong and the pull of wooded ridges that all seem to lead uphill.
Let the adventure begin!
The Lodge guestrooms open to mountain or forest views, with plush mattresses for crashing after a day on the trail. Cabins offer decks and fireplaces and are set either on the mountaintop or down along the creek below the falls, and select cabins welcome dogs. Head down to the Visitor Center to learn more about the park's history and wildlife, or stand beneath the park's iconic stone archway, where the eight-mile Approach Trail begins its climb toward the Appalachian Trail. The park adds zip line canopy tours, 3D archery, hatchet throwing, guided waterfall hikes, and plenty more ways to get outside.
The onsite Cascades Restaurant & Bar serves meals with a view in its dining room lined with windows that look out across the park toward the Blue Ridge Mountains. Cascades offers an extensive buffet, complete with main dishes, a salad bar, sides, and a dessert bar, as well as an à la carte menu. You can also pull up for a drink at the bar.
