A historic Victorian mansion in Durango.
Built in 1892 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Gable House Inn gives downtown Durango a stay with real character and a story all its own. This historic bed and breakfast brings together Victorian architecture, antique-furnished rooms, homemade breakfast, and hands-on hospitality, all just steps from the heart of town.
Homemade breakfast served with a side of history.
This Queen Anne mansion was built to make an impression, with steep gables, a wrap-around porch, and a turret that gives the inn its unmistakable presence. Built during Durango's mining-boom era by James and Eliza Schutt, it still carries that sense of grandeur. The main staircase greets you on arrival, natural light fills the rooms and common spaces, and thick late-1800s brick walls help keep the interiors calm and quiet. Over the years, Gable House Inn has lived many lives, including time as Ochsner Hospital and later as the county's first public hospital, before becoming the bed and breakfast it is today.
Where the stay is the experience.
No two rooms at Gable House Inn are alike. Each has been individually decorated and named for the people who shaped the home over time, from the Schutt family who built it to Dr. Ochsner, who later used it as a private hospital, and Heather, the longtime innkeeper who helped carry its story forward. Antique beds, period furnishings, natural light, and carefully chosen details give each room its own character. That same character carries into the inn's common spaces. Relax on the front porch or in the Victorian parlor, take in the gardens from the second-floor balcony, or head to the upstairs lounge for games and space to work.
Each morning begins with a beautifully prepared homemade breakfast served in the dining room on fine china, with fresh coffee, tea, and juice. The menu changes with the season and the kitchen's inspiration, from blueberry mascarpone stuffed French toast to savory Southwest-style breakfasts, made with farm-fresh eggs, garden herbs, and local ingredients whenever possible. Whether you linger over the full morning spread or head out early with something delicious in hand, the innkeepers make sure no one starts the day hungry. After breakfast, downtown Durango is yours to explore, with restaurants, cafés, and bars just a short stroll away.
