The Birchwood

A small boutique with big personality.

At The Canopy Rooftop Lounge, atop the fifth floor of this 18-room St. Petersburg inn, guests, tourists, and locals mingle over cold cocktails, casual eats, and unbeatable views of Tampa Bay. On the ground-floor, on-site restaurant Birch & Vine, one of St. Petersburg's top fine-dining spots, boasts a 225-seat dining room and a menu with a cast of characters ranging from pan-seared foie and butter-poached lobster to day boat fish. A creative touch: the chef calls the day boat fish by the name of the boat it came in on.

A beautifully revitalized apartment building, originally built in 1924, facing the waters of Tampa Bay.

What it's like

Calling this Spanish mission-style building home for a few days might be the best way to get to know the lively, arts-y, and of course beachy St. Petersburg. Themed with 1920s decor, (a nod to the original structure, Lantern Lane Apartments), rooms come with a modern take on a classically elegant look—dark wooden bedposts, accented-with-damask-upholstery headboards, barrel ceilings and Italian tapestries.

Independent spirit

A bed and breakfast feel with a little nightlife on top

Small touches

The hyper-stylized, undeniably enormous bathrooms, furnished with porcelain clawfoot tubs and walk-in rainfall showers.

Eat and drink

Wine Spectator Award winning Birch & Vine is destination dining at your doorstep. Birch tree accents play out throughout the main dining room, which is flanked by large, circular booth seating. Bistro lights run above the private dining room, annexed off the main room, and well-kept vines and shrubbery surround—the result: your own private garden-party. The food: on paper it's compelling, on the plate it’s perfection.
