Hawthorne Hotel

Charming Salem boutique, teeming with history and local pride

Since 1925, the historic Hawthorne Hotel has been a jewel in the heart of downtown Salem. The location couldn’t be better: It’s steps from Salem’s most famous attractions, adjacent to the Salem Common, and convenient to Boston and the North Shore. This icon has hosted over 1 million guests, and its Grand Ballroom has been the site of countless celebrations. While the Hawthorne Hotel makes a point of honoring history, its ethos is certainly a progressive one. Above everything else, Hawthorne Hotel is deeply committed to providing guests an authentic Salem experience.

What it's like

From the moment you step under the blue awning and through its double doors, the historic Hawthorne Hotel will make you feel right at home. It starts with the personal service from a seasoned staff who believe hospitality is the cornerstone of an exceptional stay. The Hawthorne has been an integral part of the city of Salem and Boston's North Shore since its inception in 1925.  The beautifully restored, stately Federal-style hotel is named for author Nathaniel Hawthorne, who spent his childhood in Salem. While this hotel is steeped in historical charm -- its warm, inclusive spirit is timeless.

Eat and drink

The Hawthorne Hotel features two in-house restaurants, so you can enjoy options and variety. Honor the Hawthorne Hotel’s namesake novelist with a breakfast or dinner in Nathaniel’s, offering American fare in a setting with a 1920's vibe. Want to eat as the locals do? The Tavern on the Green is the perfect hangout when you are looking to catch a game while enjoying New England beers or unwind after a day of regional exploration with the family. During winter months, the roaring fireplace creates the ideal atmosphere to relax with friends.

And more

From the prime location to the plentiful spots for memorable photo ops -- and of course the exceptional level of service -- it’s no wonder the Hawthorne Hotel is a popular setting to get married.  Already hitched?  The hotel caters to any large-scale occasion.  And everyone is invited to the monstrous annual Hawthorne Halloween Ball, but get your tickets and reservations early, they sell out nearly a year in advance!
