Halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, The Carlton opened in 1929 as an upscale overnight. In its glory days, the property welcomed many famous visitors--Jack Benny, Bette Davis to name a couple. Fully revived by 2005, The Carlton continues to boast a blend of Roaring '20s furnishings and 21st-century amenities.

What it's like

Rooms, with high ceilings and period furniture, are widespread and come with loads of extras: high thread-count bedding, brass fixtures, oversize whirlpool tubs, in-room refrigerators, and light-up shaving mirrors. Friendly staff will direct you to nearby wine country, pristine beaches, and quiet country roads.
